Interview with I Prevail

It’s hard to believe that I Prevail only have one EP under their belts, but the band shot to fame after posting a cover of ‘Blank Space’ which was featured on Punk Goes Pop Vol. 6. Their EP ‘Heart vs Mind’ was incredible and lead singer, Brian Burkheiser, took the time to answer my questions. We spoke about their debut album, their upcoming tour and how the band first started.

How did you guys meet?

When I started the project I found Steve, our lead guitarist, online. Then we met Eric (Harsh Vocals) at Taco Bell and found Lee (Drummer) through YouTube. None of us had actually ever met before the band started!

Where did the name ‘I Prevail’ come from?

We were looking for a positive name that could kind of portray us as a band. A dictionary and a few hours later ‘I Prevail’ was born.

The ‘Blank Space’ cover generated a lot of attention and brought you more fans (or at least, it worked for me!), did you ever expect that to happen?

When we released the cover our goal was 5,000 views. Never in my wildest dreams would I of envisioned it to be where it’s at now.

How does the writing process work for you?

For me, I’m very heavily engaged on the vocal side of things so I’m always creating new melodies and lyrics and bringing them to the table in hopes it can spark a full song to be written.

To you what is the most important, the easiest and the hardest part of a song?

Important: Keeping it catchy and interesting throughout the whole song.

Easiest: When the song is finished. 😉

Hardest: Finding the perfect synth sounds.

What would you like to achieve through your music?

I just want to make people feel better.

I really love the sound of ‘Heart vs Mind’, who would you say influences your sound?

We all draw from a lot of different genres and artist. It’s kind of a mixing pot I guess you would say.

What song would you recommend to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?

‘Love, Lust, and Liars’

There’s a new album on the way – what can fans expect from the new music?

If you liked our EP, you should love this album. I think we’ve just matured a lot in our writing process while still keeping that ‘I Prevail’ sound.

If you can sum it up in three words what would they be?

New improved sound.

What is the most challenging song to play live?

For me it’s ‘The Enemy’. Some days I regret putting the chorus in that song 4 times. There’s not a whole lot of time to catch my breath!

Anyone you’d like to collaborate with?

Jacoby from Papa Roach.

What’s your fondest musical memory?

Learning that I had the ability to sing.

What’s your earliest musical memory?

Playing the piano with my Grandpa as a kid.

My mum gets me to ask everyone – what’s your favourite app?

Snapchat. I just have too much fun with the filters!

If you could play with anyone living or dead who would it be?

Funny answer, but I’d actually go with one of our producers BJ Perry. He’s a very big piece of the I Prevail sound and I’ve known him since I was a teen. It would be fun to get him on stage for a show.

If you’re buying music, do you buy it as a CD, on vinyl or digital?

I’m a digital guy, but I still pick up CD’s every now and then.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Before every show I have a different handshake with all the guys, kinda like they do in sports before games.

How do you feel about this upcoming tour?

Ready to get back at it! We’ve been off now for a little while so I know everyone is itching to get back on the road.

Any chance we’ll see you over in the UK?

I guarantee we will be there soon!! We have so much support in the UK, I can’t wait to get over there.

Have you ever met an idol and freaked out?

Meeting the guys in ADTR when I was just a teenager was a really big moment for me. Really pushed me to know what I wanted to do with my life.

Any artists you’re into that might surprise fans? Or any upcoming artists you’d recommend?

Hmmm… My music taste has a lot of variety. Some of my favourites right now are This Wild Life, Dayseeker, and Witt Lowry.

Any advice to give to aspiring musicians?

If you’re not going to put every ounce of your time and effort into it then don’t bother. This industry won’t accept it if you want to be at the top.

What are you looking forward to from 2016?

Getting our new album out, I’m so excited to see the reaction to all the hard work we’ve put in.

I Prevail 16

The ‘Heart vs Mind’ EP is pure brilliance and if you haven’t got it already then I highly recommend giving it a listen. Keep an eye out for news on the album, because it’s going to be amazing. I Prevail are only going to get better and better and you’re going to want to be there for the ride, if you’re in the US I recommend trying to get down to one of the dates on their tour, and if not then keep an eye out for new music and tour updates.
