Country singer Cameron Hawthorn reveals a side of himself he’s never revealed publicly before in his new video for ‘Dancing in the Living Room’. The song is raw and vulnerable, drawing on the Americana, Country, Folk and pop genres to create a really unique, genre-defying sound.
The song and its accompanying video are incredibly touching. Hawthorn confides, “I remember always thinking how special it was to dance freely with my boyfriend in the living room of our apartment – being gay, it’s not as easy to dance as a couple in public together as it is for a straight couple. I wanted to express how special that moment is for a couple, when it’s just the two of you in the privacy of your own four walls”. This video was a coming out for Hawthorn, with the final couple revealed being him and his partner.
I adore this video. Its message and inclusivity is much needed throughout genres of music and Hawthorn really delivers. ‘Dancing in the Living Room’ is more than a political statement, it is a genuine love song that drips with pure passion. As a gay person myself, seeing that representation within a video in such a pure and unsexualised way was refreshing. I’m excited to see where this openness will take Hawthorn and what the future holds for this talented star.
