Interview with atWood

So I had the opportunity to interview the up and coming Italian band atWood and I am not disappointed in their answers and I don’t think you will be too, see below for what they had to say…

1. How did you come up with the name atWood?

Well, we must admit that we didn’t actively “look for” our name. One day the guitar player came up with “atWood”. It could surely have many fancy meanings, but what if we said “The OC”? We loved it as soon as he suggested it, since it’s fresh for a band our genre, so we chose it.

2. Tell me about the ideas and concepts behind the Black Mirror music video.

We could not have released the video for Black Mirror without the expertise of videomaker “Dalilù”. She is an incredible professional, and helped us translate into actual images the concepts of strain, distress and longing for freedom from other people’s chains and ropes which permeate Black Mirror as a song and “at odds” as an EP. We wanted listeners and viewers to feel every single bit of what we feel when playing our music.

In the end, we must have managed to convey our (few) ideas, cause when she presented her concept for the video, we agreed 100%. She completely nailed it, it’s like she managed to read our minds. We’re very grateful to her for the passion and effort she put into perfecting everything. We made a few suggestions here and there, but she really took care of everything, from effects to set design.

3. If you all had to create a concert, what 3 bands would you choose and why?

It’s pretty hard to choose only three, but we can try. We’d say Bring Me the Horizon, Twenty one pilots and Billie Eilish, because they pursue sound perfection and innovation, which is exactly what we’re trying to do.

4. Do you think that you have faced any limitations only having three members in the band?

In the beginning we have, but then we had to adapt. Sure, it’s not easy, but now it’s normal to be only the three of us. We were actually forced to focus on writing drums ourselves, which gave us perspective on another instrument.

5. How did you all meet and create a band?

Our journey began officially in September 2017, when Alice joined the band. Daniele and Alessio, guitar and bass respectively, had been friends since high school. We started by playing reimagined covers, in sort of a “punk goes pop” vibe, but then decided that we wanted to write our own stuff. Hence, our EP “at odds”.

6. What is the writing process like?

We do not write from scratch.Usually we work mainly on Daniele’s ideas. We analyze them, team up to develop them and try to build consistent music, which takes quite a long time to perfect (we practice 7-10 hours/week).

7. Where in the world would you love to tour?

USA, Canada, the UK and Russia.

8. Where do you see the band in five years time?

Playing Rock Am Ring, hopefully! We know we’re aiming pretty high, but hey, we can dream, can’t we? We do truly believe in what we’re doing, and we found the perfect balance and harmony when it comes to writing and producing. The true question here is: where do you see us in 5 years?

9. What is the best thing about being in the band?

You know, at the end of the day, a band is more than being friends – it’s family. It might sound cliché, but it’s true. We spend more time together than we do with our friends and parents, make mistakes together, grow up together, fight and make peace afterwards. We win and we lose together, just like a family does.

10. What is everyone’s favourite dessert?

Dan: Tiramisù

Alice: Sachertorte

Alessio: Tiramisù

11. What is everyone’s favourite musical?

Dan: Tiramisù

Alice: Sachertorte

Alessio: Tiramisù

12. How did everyone get into music?

We’ve always been keen on music. We actually believe you do not get into music – music gets into you.
